PHILOSOPHY
St. Cecilia School is a Christian learning center dedicated to the total life experience of the child. We aim to teach our children how to live life to its fullest. We recognize that this means educating the whole person - bringing his/her spiritual, intellectual, physical and social being into relationship with self, God, and fellow man/woman.
The
school exists as an educational endeavor of the Catholic Archdiocese of
Detroit. As an affiliate of this Archdiocese, Saint Cecilia School
attempts to present the message of Jesus with an understanding of the present
teaching of the Catholic faith. We welcome all children of the community
and respect and are open to their different religious beliefs and backgrounds.
In order to bring about quality education an the highest standards of development, it will be necessary to do the following:
1. Foster academic and value formation by employing a variety of teaching methods, relevant textbooks, current materials, experiences outside the classroom and resource persons in the community.
2. Foster ethnic awareness with particular emphasis on the African-American culture.
3. Establish a close working relationship between parents, students, faculty, and education commission.
We
anticipate that the parents, who are the prime educators of their children, will
see themselves as cooperating in the development of a proper
academic attitude in their children.
Each student is expected to acquire the attitude needed to learn, and to apply himself/herself to the educational process. The student will be encouraged to strive for excellence in his or her work.
The faculty will strive to recognize and draw out the potential inherent in each child by developing the best possible methods of stimulating and challenging the students. It is their responsibility to develop a curriculum that will foster the spiritual, intellectual, physical and social growth of the individual child. It is important to remember that not any one of these areas of growth can be considered secondary to any other.
In order for the school to be a successful Christian learning center, it is necessary that all those who touch it strive for the goals of this philosophy.

In 2005, The Skillman Foundation announced the winning Detroit elementary schools in the first phase of its new, multi-million dollar education initiative, Good Schools: Making the Grade. All Detroit elementary schools were invited to apply for Good Schools improvement grants and technical assistance. After a review of applications and site visits by teams of educators, parents, business and community leaders, The Skillman Foundation has selected St. Cecilia Grade School as an aspiring elementary school in the City of Detroit.
